beijing

2 blogs in one city ? well with free internet access and a bit of time on our hands we thought we'd make the most of it - and thought it might prompt a little more home gossip to filter through to us!
so, start of last week we were travelling around beijing to see off the last of our original 'group' from russia - really just to make sure they were leaving!! but we kept mark and michelle whom we'd met in lestvyanka and convinced them to hang around in beijing and accompany us to xian - couldn't possibly go anywhere on our own yet! marks even looking after our train tickets and despite being the youngest is doing a good job as the responsible adult - michelle has him well trained.
Beijing is a very good place just to hang around, and for anyone thinking of visiting do it soon - everything will be very different by the 2008 olympics. we've fought the hoards of chinese tourists to see the sights but most enjoyed just hanging around the hutongs which unfortunately may not be around much longer. we've been bartering for eveything from souvenirs to water and are now proud owners of a v cool teapot! we've lost peter the provonister but i am now caroline the tea lady! amazing watching family life in the hutongs, the kids with split trousers so they're free to roam and pee and one chinese lady we cant walk past without stopping to eat with! we had true peking duck last night from a stall in the hutong (although we were soft core and asked for it without its head). 15 rmb whole duck where its 200 in the restaurants and no vomitting or diarrhoea yet :)
we met alex, james, greg and sarah in mongolia and weren't hugely shocked alex was a vet from lindesys year at edinburgh. we've met up with them twice in beijing, with james acting as a kind of jerry replacement - providing the entertainment!!
the plan so far - xian by train tomorrow (monday), then to chengdu a couple of days later. still hoping to have time to get to lijiang and guilin before crossing to vietnam (for which we now have visas :) will update hopefully in xian
love to all

Hi Caz, I hope you enjoy Xian, the teracota army is pretty amazing. I remember enjoying the train trip aswell. Somehow it seemed a lot more like real travelling instead of the trans siberian where we were in a cabin with other Europeans. P.S. I passed my viva so you have to call me Dr Brother from now on.
