sydney to melbourne...

so after blowing huge amounts of money daily in sydney we headed north to the blue mountains before getting down to the serious task of finding work. we're already starting to budget in the vast amounts of money we're going to make! we made it to katoomba via a scenic drive and camped there in our new (if slightly used and a little bit frail) tent. we'd given in already and bought a lonely planet in sydney but as we only have this and a small scale map of australia getting anywhere is quite an adventure. we stayed in katoomba 2 nigths (thanks to amy...) before heading out to megalong valley purely because of the name. much of the rainforrest further north is still suffering from novembers bushfires and a fair bit of victoria is on fire, but driving down megalong valley the views and wildlife were great. we saw our first roos etc etc etc. guro did her usual, and wanted to see what was right at the end of megalong valley (despite driving through a few km of private land over roads that were sure to cause another car failure) but i'm sooooo glad we did. we camped at a fantastic site in the blue mountains national park (for free!) the only person we saw was ray, who was living in a small but lovely holiday 'shack' across the valley. he wandedred over with his laptop at dusk as this was the only spot he could get net reception. he called the tree stump he perched on 'his office'. we went over for a cup of tea, met tom the dog and within half an hour had agreed to house/dog sit for 2/3 days whilst ray went to watch the cricket in sydeny :)
tom the dog is 1/4 dingo and fantastic. he only had a very small taste of me once :) spent 2 great days doing very little apart from reading books and having amusing outdoor showers under a tree... great little adventure, but now we miss tom. sure he wanted to come with us, he even climbed in to the car and had to be lured out with food before we could leave.
after leaving the blue mountains we followed the princes highway along the coast to melbourne. more or less spent 2 days driving apart from a few stops to find somewhere to camp! very busy route, so instead of sleeping next to kangeroos on pebbly beach for free we ended up in a caravan park :( hope the schools go back soon! I got eaten by a swarm of mosquitoes and had to hide in the tent until they'd gone. many more blogs to come to catch up, been v busy. and promise some more funny photos x
