Kerang!
So, am sure this has been mentioned or most of you have heard, i have once again followed in my sisters footsteps (much to guros delight) and ended up working for the same vet practice big sis did not so many years ago. i mean, what are the chances of that? we took a 2 week job in kerang for one vet, thinking we'd share the work and the wage so we got a gentle start back to work, and that is kinda how it worked out!after filling amy's coolant resevoir with some sealant stuff we drove her without the hint of a leak up to kerang. we stopped on route in ararat at a not so nice campsite who literally turned off the light in the bbq area and told us to go to bed (about 9.30pm) as we were half way through our kangeroo steaks! stubbornly we persisted with headtorches but after 30mins of bugs flying around our faces we gave in, washed up (yup, in the dark) and went to bed.
we met jan (our boss) at the practice next day, she gave us a quick talk through current cases, showed us the practice which had suprisingly good facilities, and explained how to treat a snake bite. she showed us to libby's place on her farm (a cottage her daughter moved into at christmas) who kindly took us in, whom we then asked all those little questions we'd forgoten to ask jan, like what time did we start in the morning!
It is almost like being back in Wales/Hereford! Just a bit hotter and a few more snakes. Did start to think that it was too hot for blood samples to clot here, but it turned out that all the dogs just live of ratbait. Still haven't had a night without a dog in on a drip trying to bleed its way out of life... Apart from that, the animals are very similar to home - some cute, some nasty and some both. Have been out to a couple of farms and met some lovely farmers too. The locum from 1996 is still here because of one of those farmers... But I (Guro now, Caroline is in Melbourne playing with racing greyhounds) have p[romised Caroline to lay off them :)
Libby took us to the local pub last weekend, much fun to be the new faces in town. Didn't pay for many drinks to put it that way :), and only have a few bruises from falling of a very narrow plank crossing a ditch on the way home. Libby claimed it was a short cut... Will repeat the pub experience this weekend anyway!
It is very pretty up here. Completely flat, and so so dry! It hasn't rained properly for 2 months, and instead of rainstorms, they have dust storms. But here is still lots of pretty plants and many many cool birds (flamin' galas etc) thanks to Murray River running through. Will go get photos for next time I get a chance to email - the very quite practice is quite busy when you're alone :)
More next time!
Lots of love and congratulations to Fudge for passing his exam and Hege for getting a promition!!
